America’s perennial gun problem continues without any solution in sight, unless that problem is resolved, Americans will continue to lose lives

America’s gun problem seems to have acquired gigantic proportions of late.

While the right to self-defence is a cardinal feature of any democratic country’s constitution, it doesn’t permit the right to buy and wield firearms at will.

But America doesn’t seem to get that logic, firearms such as assault rifles, shotguns and pistols continues to be sold and bought at record rates.

So are the deaths from the mass shootings.

These mass shootings are an aberration when it comes to any developed country, far less the West.

But America’s gun problem is not really new, it dates back decades and has, over time, acquired gruesome character.

The Latest Shooting Episode

18 people were killed in a mass shooting in the US state of Maine.

Maine is a relatively peaceful state, which however has high levels of gun ownership. But peaceful doesn’t mean that peace will always persist.

The shooting was perpetrated by Robert Card, who is a 40-year old Petroleum supply specialist and sergeant first class in the US army.

An internal police notice said Card had been admitted to a mental health facility for two weeks this year.

Police say the shootings happened at about 7pm on Wednesday at Schemengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley – which are situated about four miles apart.

Maine’s governor Janet Mills has confirmed at least 18 people have been killed and a further 13 injured.

As many as 50 people are also said to have been injured, not all of whom were shot. Some reportedly had injuries from a stampede.

Lax Gun Control

The right of owning firearms for Americans is guaranteed by the 2nd amendment to the US constitution.

However, the gun control laws in USA is lax to say the least. Dangerous firearms are openly sold without proper verification and safety measures.

One of the reasons behind this is the power of the pro-firearms lobby in USA led by the National Rifle Association.

However, this cannot be offered as an excuse to safeguard the life of innocent civilians.

America needs to learn a lot of things from Bharat regarding the gun control laws. Otherwise, America’s perennial gun problem will continue to claim more lives.
