Europe has been fighting Islamists and radicals ever since the open borders policy came into effect! Last year France was subject to numerous riots in the name of Islam. The peace and security of original French nationals was under siege by the tide of radical Islamist immigrants! The streets burned by fires lit in the name of Islam as the French authorities helplessly watched from the sidelines.

Since then France has taken many proactive measures to stabilize the nation and counter radicalization. The Forum de l’islam de France (FORIF) is one such measure enacted by President Macron to control the Islamic radicalization of the nation. Thereafter, 1st January 2024 witnessed another significant move to curb the radicalization of Islam. France enforces a new rule that bans Imams trained and funded by other nations from preaching in its mosques! Let’s talk about France and foreign influences on Islamic preaching. Is this Islamophobia?!??

Impact on Imams and Islamic Radicalization

As of 1st January 2024, Imams trained and funded by other nations can no longer enter France to work in its 2,900 mosques. Most Imams in France were from Turkey, Algeria, and Morocco. To ensure transparency, the Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin sent out letters to Turkey and Algeria on the same. In addition, the foreign-funded Imams already in France must change their status and gain funds from local Muslim associations. If they are unable to do so, they face deportation. The last date for the Imams to comply with the new policy is 31st March 2024. Starting 1st April 2024, France will deport all those Imams who remain funded by foreign forces.

Why did President Macron make this change? The change aims to ensure that Imams preaching in France are not beholden to external influences.

President Macron’s move counters the growing threat of ‘Islamist separatism’.

In 2020, a leaked report stated that close to 150 neighborhoods in France were under the influence of ‘Islamic Separatist’ ideology. Thus, the move is a proactive measure to counter Political Islam under foreign-funded Imams.

Moreover, in 2020, Macron explicitly stated that there is a dire need to end “foreign influences” on Islam in France. Thus, the new policy is a natural progression in limiting, if not exterminating, Islamic radicalization that spouts foreign words and ideas on French soil.

Macron’s Imam ban targets approximately 300 Imams paid by Muslim nations. The French President does not just want to keep foreign Imams out, he wants French-trained Imams to be the voice of Islam in France. The idea is to keep the traditions, culture, art, and language of France intact in the face of the rising Islamization of the nation. The move also attempts to ensure that the Muslims of France value France as much as Islam. However, the prohibition on foreign-funded Imams does not include the 300 Imama who participate every year in the Islamic holy month of “Ramadan”.

The foreign-funded Imams, on many occasions, create a sense of detachment in the hearts of their followers. They ensured that the Ummah under their jurisdictions were Muslims first and French later. These believers became a source of threat to the national security and integrity of the French Republic. Thus, President Macron was not wrong to believe that “detached Imams” had a deteriorating effect on the local populace of France.

Some of the ways :

  1. There was an increase in school dropout rates in the nation under Islamic radicalization.
  2. The fire-funding Imams found the presence of French police a form of restriction against Islam.
  3. France was subjected to many radical Islamic speeches that used Islam as a tool to talk about separatism.
  4. The detached Imams brainwashed the French Muslims against women. These Islamists refused to shake hands or be taught by any woman, irrespective of her religion.
  5. Some radicals even started to spout that laws of religion could be superior to the laws of the Republic.

Many instances created a sense of detachment in the French Ummah. Thereby, making the foreign-funded Imams an existential threat to the French Republic itself. Consequently, the French government has been trying to reinforce a sense of nationalism in its youth. Additionally, they are trying to instill Forum de l’islam de France (FORIF) into the hearts of the radicalized youth to prevent further flare-ups in the name of Islam. It is obvious that President Macron has had to walk a tight line to balance secularism and national security.

France’s proactive measures to limit external influence on Imams reflect the government’s commitment to countering Islamist radicalization and extremism. These regulations ensure the continuance of Islam in France the French way! Moreover, it helps the integrity of the nation that the Imams preaching within its borders adhere to the laws and principles of the French Republic.

Bharat can learn a lot by watching the French. Despite being cleaved in the name of the religion, the nation is still home to many Muslims.

The foreign-funded Madrassas and Muslim universities produce a large number of Islamists who work against national security and national interests of India.

Bharat must also come up with ways to stop foreign influence on Islam in India. The Muslims that are part of the diverse populace of India must be taught to be Isnidan first! Free speech and secularism are only alive due to the large Sanatni population of Bharat. Thus, Bhartiya Muslims must also be broken free from radical ideologies and extremist mindsets. Let’s hope that Muslims stay Muslims the world over, instead of becoming the radical force called ‘Islamists’. Else the future is full of all other religions struggling and strife against brainwashed radicals.
