Dozens of Muslim travelers gathered at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris to collectively offer Namaz, triggering a social media storm and raising pertinent questions about religious freedom and the widely discussed term – “secularism.”

The Context of Security Concerns:

The incident involving collective Namaz occurred amid heightened security concerns in France, with recent instances of violence perpetrated by individuals associated with extremist ideologies. These security concerns have been compounded by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, resulting in a series of security threats and hoaxes.

While almost all of these incidents were later revealed to be false alarms, they succeeded in instilling fear and concern among the French population. France has remained on its highest level of security alert since October 13th, when an individual shouted “Allahu Akbar” and attacked a teacher outside a school in Arras.

The Incident Unveiled:

The incident in question unfolded on November 5th when several dozen travelers were caught on camera performing Namaz in the departures hall of Charles de Gaulle Airport just before their flight to Jordan.

Former European affairs minister, Noelle Lenoir, shared these images on social media, raising questions about the airport’s response and the official status of the prayer activity.

Approximately 30 travelers participated in the collective prayer, which lasted about 10 minutes. The incident took place in terminal 2B, one of the terminals within France’s largest airport.

France’s Secular Principles:

France is renowned for its staunch secular principles. It limits on displays of religious belief in public spaces, including schools and public places such as airports and metros. The country upholds the separation of religion and the state. They emphasise the concept of laïcité, which strictly separates church and state.

Despite this unwavering commitment to secularism, France does provide dedicated enclosed areas for worship.

Government’s Response:

In response to the controversy, the French government declared its intention to address such issues firmly. Transport Minister Clément Beaune emphasized the airport authorities’ full commitment to enforcing rules. He pledged to uphold “firmness” in ensuring compliance with the country’s secular principles.

Ruling party MP Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet also highlighted the presence of dedicated places of worship at the airport. She stressed the importance of adhering to the prevailing rules in France, including those at airports.

Airport Authority’s Regret:

Augustin de Romanet, Chief Executive of Aéroports de Paris (ADP), expressed regret over the incident. He pointed out the existence of dedicated prayer spaces at the airport. De Romanet stated that border police had received instructions to prohibit such activities. They would increase vigilance to prevent future occurrences.

De Romanet also cautioned against exaggerating the incident. France has been on the highest level of security alert due to recent security concerns. This includes “bomb threats” at airports, museums, and other public places.
