Adding fuel to the fire, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s remarks regarding Nijjar’s death and his alleged involvement in terrorism have strained diplomatic relations between Canada and India. By seemingly endorsing Nijjar as a Canadian citizen who was killed on Canadian soil, Trudeau inadvertently lent support to an individual associated with extremist ideologies. This episode has raised serious questions about Canada’s stance on extremism and its commitment to global counterterrorism efforts.

Nijjar’s Troubled Past

Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s path to extremism is a complex tale that underscores the transformative power of radicalization. His initial contact with Gurdeep Singh Deepa Heran Wala, a notorious terrorist with a history of violence, played a pivotal role in his journey towards radical beliefs and actions.

Nijjar’s notoriety grew when he embarked on international campaigns to garner support for the Khalistani movement.

His appearances before the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the UN Headquarters raised eyebrows and prompted concerns about who was backing his efforts.

In November 2014, Nijjar openly advocated for the separation of Punjab from India at the UN Headquarters. It was a move that exacerbated fears about his extremist agenda. India’s issuance of an Interpol arrest warrant for Nijjar in 2014. They identified him as a “mastermind/active member” of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF). This further cemented his association with terrorism.

The warrant also linked Nijjar to the 2007 bombing of the Shingar Cinema in Punjab, with suspects claiming they acted on his instructions. A subsequent Interpol notice in 2016 accused him of being the “mastermind and key conspirator of many terrorist acts in India,” carrying charges of terrorism, recruitment, and fundraising, potentially resulting in a life sentence.

Nijjar vehemently denied these charges, describing them as “baseless and fabricated” in a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau. Although he faced assault charges in March 2019, the case was ultimately stayed in December of the same year.

A Disputed Legacy

In addition to his involvement in extremist activities, Nijjar was embroiled in a dispute over a commercial printing press. He had acquired the machine from Ripudaman Singh Malik, who was acquitted of involvement in the 1985 Air India bombings. Malik had entrusted Nijjar with the press for safekeeping, but Nijjar refused to return it. Malik’s tragic murder in July 2022 led to a lawsuit filed in February 2023 seeking the return of the equipment.

The life and actions of Hardeep Singh Nijjar present a complex and troubling narrative. His association with extremism and terrorism underscores the global challenges posed by individuals who promote violence and division. Nijjar’s legacy is a cautionary tale. It highlights the dangers of radicalization and the imperative of addressing extremism in all its forms.
