In the vast expanse of the universe, it appears that West Bengal’s Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, is having a tough time finding her way through the stars and historical events. Not too long after her mix-up between astronaut Rakesh Sharma and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, Banerjee has once again taken the cosmic route, claiming that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had embarked on a lunar journey.
At a recent TMC Youth wing rally, Banerjee left the audience bewildered with her assertion, “When Indira reached the moon, she asked Rakesh how does India look from up there.” While it’s no secret that Banerjee has a flair for dramatic statements, this one truly launched a thousand memes.
Just a week prior, as India celebrated its triumphant entry into the league of nations capable of soft-landing rovers on the moon, Banerjee was making waves for all the wrong reasons. This time, her muddled narrative seemed to suggest that astronaut Rakesh Sharma engaged in a tête-à-tête with former PM Indira Gandhi, while filmmaker Rakesh Roshan apparently took an otherworldly expedition.
In a video that rapidly spread like wildfire across the internet, the Bengal CM can be seen proclaiming, “I remember, when Rakesh Roshan landed on the Moon, Indira Gandhi asked him how does India look from there…” It’s commendable that Banerjee is dedicated to making history interesting, even if that means rewriting it.
The occasion marked his participation in the Soviet Interkosmos program, a far cry from moon-walking with Rakesh Roshan.
The highlight of this cosmic adventure was the exchange that transpired between Indira Gandhi and Sharma. Seated aboard the spacecraft, Sharma responded to the former PM’s inquiry about how India appeared from space with the resounding words, “Saare Jahan Se Achcha, Hindustan Hamara,” translating to “more beautiful than the entire world, is our Hindustan.”
While one could argue that Banerjee’s version of events does add a sprinkle of whimsy to history, it also exemplifies the importance of fact-checking, even in the realm of political speeches. The universe might be vast, but the plethora of information available at our fingertips is vaster still.
