Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the Supreme Court in Delhi. He began his address by congratulating the Supreme Court for having entered its 75th year. On this occasion he stated that the Indian Supreme Court has consistently worked to uphold the ideals of freedom, equality, and justice—principles that the constitution makers envisioned for a sovereign India. “Whether it is social justice, personal freedom, or freedom of expression, the Supreme Court has strengthened India’s vibrant democracy,” said the prime minister. He gave reference of historic rulings on free speech and individual rights that have given new direction to the socio-political landscape of the country.

Prime Minister Modi restated the objectives for the next 25 years for each branch of the government and stated that laws made today will lay foundation of a bright future of India.

During the event he unveiled a number of citizen-centric information and technology projects. These projects include Digital Courts 2.0, Digi SCR, and a new bilingual Supreme Court website.

  • Digital Court Reports(Digi SCR)- will make the Supreme Court rulings freely available and electronically accessible to all citizens. Its salient features includes open access, bookmarking and user-friendliness. It will ensure availability of all 519 volumes of Supreme Court reports from 1950 onwards, covering over 36,308 cases.
  • Digital Court 2.0- It aims to make all court records electronically accessible to the judges of district courts. In addition to this, artificial intelligence (AI) performs real-time speech-to-text translation. He expressed his delight as he announced that the Bhashini App translates his address into English in real time. It serves as a perfect example of how technology can help facilitate ease of Justice.
  • Prime Minister Modi also unveiled the Supreme Court’s new website. It will be in a bilingual format (English and Hindi) with a user friendly interface.
  • Then in the light of changing geopolitical scenario wherein all eyes are on India. PM Modi emphasised the need to make use of the opportunities coming our way. He mentioned that just like ease of doing business, “Ease of Justice is the right of every citizen and the supreme court, its medium.” To ensure this the government aims to make the Supreme Court accessible to the remotest corners of the country. For this, the government increased the allocation of the third phase of “e-court Project” four times of its second phase.
  • He reiterated the governments commitment towards improving the physical infrastructure of Judiciary, with over Rs 7000 crore disbursed since 2014. Then keeping in mind the issues of the present Supreme Court building Rs. 800 crore have been approved.
  • Modi underlined how important it is that our laws take into account both modern practices and Indian culture. “The convergence of modernity and Indian values is equally essential in our legal statutes,” he said. Highlighting the governments initiative of abolishing outdated colonial era laws with new legislations. He emphasised the need for the transition from old laws to new laws to be seamless.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the foundation of Viksit Bharat is a strong legal system. He emphasized the government’s ongoing work to establish a reliable legal framework, citing the Jan Vishwas Bill as a positive step towards reducing judicial pressure and backlog. PM Modi also mentioned implementing mediation as an alternative dispute resolution process to reduce burden on lower courts.

PM Modi concluded his address by reminding all that its the collective responsibility of every citizen to realise India’s goal of becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

He congratulated the Supreme Court on its 75th anniversary and emphasised the crucial role it will play in shaping the country’s future over the next 25 years.
