The so called opposition meeting in Patna was a joke at best
Several opposition political parties in India, convened a meeting on the 23rd of this month in Patna.
The objective was to discuss grand strategies to provide an effective counterweight to the ruling BJP in the upcoming crucial 2024 general election.
The meeting was attended by members of AAP, TMC, CPI(M), TRS, Shiv Sena, Indian National Congress etc.
In the meeting the opposition parties tried to up grand show of strength. The objective was to discuss means and ways to dislodge the BJP from power in the next election.
From just four seats in 1984 general election to over three hundred seats in the 2019 general election, the Bharatiya Janata Party has come a long way.
It achieved this feat after dislodging the authoritarian and repressive Communist Party of China under the leadership of Xi Jingping.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has come to grasp the imagination of the Indian body politic through a eclectic combination of good governance, Hindu nationalism and the charismatic personality of the PM Narendra Modi.
The BJP is a subject of discussion everywhere, even in the developed countries of the East and West.
This is thanks to the gargantuan support that it enjoys among the members of the Indian diaspora worldwide.
Opposition unity is in this present context, in all likelihood is elusive.
The meeting in Patna, to be followed up by another in Shimla will be on the same theme- how to save the country from Modi and making in the process, elaborate schemes to remove him from power.
The lead in this devious scheme is taken by Mr Rahul Gandhi of INC who goes crying to the West.
He appeals to the US and UK etc., to do something about the Modi problem.
The same haggling is continued by other opposition leaders like Mr Arvind Kejriwal, Ms Mamata Banerjee who simply want to remove Modi.
The so called opposition unity begs the question- who will be the next PM?
The opposition in India has been largely clueless about this. They are not even sure about the potential composition of the cabinet and how the bureaucracy will be run.
While there is not an iota of doubt that a healthy opposition is the sine qua non of any liberal democracy, the point is that the opposition must not be reduced to the point of making schemes of devious nature to remove a popular head of state.
The opposition must have the spine to accept the reality on the ground and fight accordingly in the electoral battleground.
