In a fiery election campaign rally in Betul, Madhya Pradesh, on November 14th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi didn’t mince words. He dubbed Congress scion Rahul Gandhi as ‘Murkhon ke Sardar’. The scathing remark was in response to Rahul Gandhi’s ludicrous claim that all mobile phones in India are ‘made in China.’

Taking the stage, PM Modi wasted no time dismantling Rahul’s baseless assertion. The Prime Minister didn’t shy away from ridiculing Rahul Gandhi directly. He branded him as the ‘Murkhon Ke Sardar’. He labelled Congress leaders of suffering from a mental illness that compels them to undermine India’s achievements.
The Prime Minister didn’t limit his criticism to phone-related fabrications. He took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi’s mysterious foreign trips. Modi questioned the peculiar foreign spectacles that seem to blind him to India’s development.
PM Modi seized the moment to showcase India’s triumph in mobile phone manufacturing, debunking Rahul’s claim. Contrary to the ‘made in China’ narrative, PM Modi proudly declared India as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer. Under the ‘Make-in-India’ initiative, he highlighted an annual production worth Rs 3.5 lakh crore. Rs 1 lakh crore worth of mobile phones are being exported to other countries.
Driving home the message of supporting indigenous products, Modi stressed the significance of being ‘vocal for local.’ He pointed to the Diwali shopping spree. People spent a whopping ₹4.4 lakh crores on India-made products. It was a clear endorsement of Swadeshi. It is a concept that seemed lost on those who conveniently remember ‘Make in India’ only during election seasons.
Backing up his claims with data from Counterpoint, Modi highlighted the staggering 23% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in mobile phone shipments. It is under the ‘Make-in-India’ initiative. From a mere 19% local manufacturing rate in 2014, the figure skyrocketed to over 98% in 2022. It was a testament to the success of the government’s efforts to boost local production.
In a final blow, the Prime Minister highlighted recent developments that further solidify India’s position as a global manufacturing hub. Alphabet Inc announced plans to manufacture Pixel smartphones in India. They have already started with Pixel 8. Additionally, Tata Electronics Private Limited is set to manufacture iPhones in India for both domestic and global markets.
