Lo and behold the success of the Modi -Jaishankar Combination! India’s diplomatic relations have developed marvelously over the last 10 years. The success is evident in the remarkable release of eight Indian Navy Veterans by Qatar. These Navy veterans were on a death watch for espionage charges.

The release of these veterans showcases the significant breakthrough in diplomatic relations between India and Qatar achieved by the Ministry of External Affairs and Union Minister Jaishaker. Of the eight, seven veterans have returned to India, marking the end of a harrowing ordeal that began with their arrest in August 2022.

Accusations to Freedom: The Ordeal of Indian Navy Veterans

Qatar accused eight former Indian Navy personnel of espionage; namely Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vashisht, Commander Purenendu Tiwari, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Commander Amit Nagpal, and Sailor Rajesh. Qatar suspected them of leaking information related to a submarine program in the nation.

These former members of Indian Naval forces got entangled in a legal battle that threatened their lives. Despite 20 years of unblemished service records, they faced a grim future.

Here is the quick view of their ordeal:

  • Their struggle for freedom began with their arrest in August 2022 while working for a private company called Al Dahra.
  • Formal charges of espionage were filed against them in March 2023.
  • Shocking death sentences were awarded to them by Qatar’s Court of First Instance in October 2023. The sentencing marked an accelerated effort by the Ministry of External Affairs to get these sons of soil back home.
  • Finally, India’s persistent diplomatic efforts bore fruit when an appellate court in Qatar commuted their death sentences on December 27, 2023.
  • Doha released these eight veterans of the Indian Navy on 12th February 2024.

When the death sentence was passed, PM Modi’s critics started their sloganeering and ‘jumlabazi’ against the BJP government’s competence. Their stance implied that the ‘Muslim world hates Modi’ and that these poor Indian souls will pay the price for it. Most nay-sayers took to social media to laugh whenever the Modi-Jaiskankar duo engaged in proactive positive interactions.

Their words highlighted their secret delight at the diplomatic dilemma in Qatar. One might even think they were hoping for these ex-Indian Navy personnel to face a gruesome end to bludgeon the BJP with it!
"It wouldn't have been possible for us to stand here without the intervention of PM Modi. And it also happened due to the continuous efforts of the Government of India," says one of the Navy veterans who returned from #Qatar

Contrary to such expectations, Bharat’s proactive engagement with Qatari authorities was successful. Legal appeals and consular assistance by Bharat played a crucial role in securing the release of the Indian Navy veterans. Victory was in sight after achieving the decision to commute the death sentences. This decision was a diplomatic win for India that reflected the External Affairs Ministry’s efficacy at bilateral dialogue and cooperation under the BJP’s governance.
