Sanatana wedding rituals are deeply rooted in Vedic traditions. They celebrate nature and life with vibrant colors that are rich in symbolism. Among all the hues of celebration, red stands out as the quintessential color that symbolizes love, purity, and fertility. However, in recent times, there has been a growing trend towards pastel-colored bridal wear where the hue of red is so slight that they have begun to resemble an Almost-White Wedding. Is this the latest intrusion of red Sanatana Weddings? Why is the youth of today being led towards shades of pastels against red in Sanatana Weddings? What is the significance of red in Sanatana weddings? Are Indian weddings being encroached upon by the Western concept of ‘White Wedding’?

In Sanatana weddings, hues of red are the color of choice for bridal attire. The color symbolizes love, passion, purity, and fertility. The red bindi, red sindoor, red tilak, red choodi, etc. are all used to mark an auspicious beginning of a new journey. The color red signifies a lifelong commitment and the warmth of marital love in a Vivaha.

Red is also associated with the Ma Shakti, who embodies the primordial feminine energy. Sanatana women wear red to honor their inner goddess. They wear red to weddings and auspicious occasions to represent the life-giving force or Shakti of creation. In a Sanatana Wedding, brides adorn themselves in red attire to seek her blessings for a harmonious and prosperous married life. Moreover, the color red attracts positive feminine energies toward females. Thus, married women are also encouraged to wear red in some form in their lives.

Celebration of Fertility

Red represents the life force, vitality, and the potential for new beginnings. Thus, it is also a color associated with fertility. Sanatana Brides wear red or its hues to seek blessings from the Supreme powers to grant them a chance to propagate life in the world. The color echoes the desire of Dharmic women for a prosperous family that seeks the blessings of the divine for the continuity of generations.

Pastels: A Departure from Tradition

Bollywood brides have been busy in the last few years. Most actresses have sought to make a style statement by wearing unique colors to set their weddings apart. However, their color choices have started a trend of pastel-colored bridal wear. These wedding attires are completely opposite of any Vedic ritual or color associated with Vivaha traditions. While pastels may be aesthetically pleasing, they lack the deep-rooted symbolism and cultural significance that red carries.

Choosing a weak and watered-down pastel color over red not only dilutes the color of the ceremony, it also diminishes the spiritual significance and sacred resonance of the ritual.

Lately, Bollywood Weddings have been an Almost-White-Wedding phenomenon. While the attire is Indian-origin-inspired, the Brides are white-washed versions of Sanatani Vadhu. If these people kept their private moments just that it would not be a social concern. However, they ‘leak’ photographs of their happy occasions and have tried to set a trend of close-to-white colors in Sanantani Vivaha. Such trends deserve to be questioned. What is the true intent behind these celebrities and their Anything-But-Red wedding pictures? Are they not propagating the Western concept of White Wedding in Indian Traditions?

The latest debasement of Sanatani Traditions comes from the Raghav Chadha and Parineeti Chopra washed-out-as-close-to-‘white’ wedding. The Vadhu, Parineeti, wore colors that were so close to white that it may as well have been a Christian Wedding. The color of the bride’s attire and the decoration of the wedding displayed the couple’s Westernized thinking. While some people may argue that the color of a wedding is a personal preference, they must understand that each ritual and the colors used in it have certain symbolic and religious context. Would you make a Muslim Bride wear saffron at her wedding? Would a Christian Bride wear Black to the Church? The answer is obviously ‘No’. So why are personal choices to be given preference over Sanatana Customs?

The Way Forward with Vedic Beliefs

Public figures must know that their actions influence the thinking of the new generation. Their personal choices can lead the malleable minds of the youth astray. Thus, the Almost-White Weddings that have gradually infiltrated Indian Vivaha Customs have been promoted by the Liberal Brigade and ‘Sickularists’. They are subtly trying to help the next generation of Bharat denounce traditional rituals and seek fulfillment in colors and customs that denote a preference for the West. The introduction of the ‘white wedding’ diminishes the sanctity of the ceremony. It transforms a spiritually significant event into a mere imitation of Western traditions, risking the loss of cherished customs and values.

Therefore, the youths of today must realize that while personal preferences and fashion trends evolve, it is essential to preserve the sanctity of Sanatana weddings and rituals. They must connect with the roots of Sanatana Dharma by embracing red as the dominant color for bridal attire. Their choices in life must walk the path of righteousness that reinforces the spiritual significance of the Sanatani ceremonies. Moreover, they are responsible for resisting the encroachment of the almost-white wedding trends and preserving the millennia-old culture of Bharat. By upholding the significance of red and resisting Western influences like the ‘white wedding,’ we can ensure that Sanatana weddings continue to be a sacred and cherished celebration of love and union.
