Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival, is a prominent celebration in the Hindu calendar. It signifies the journey of belief, devotion, and unity. Our tour begins in Somnath and finishes in Ayodhya, two cities with a rich history in India’s spiritual culture.
The Rath Yatra began in the historic city of Somnath, Gujarat. The city has existed as a pilgrimage destination, primarily for its famous Somnath Temple. The occasion celebrates Lord Krishna’s journey from Gokul to Mathura, which symbolised his return to the kingdom and the defeat of his oppressive uncle, Kansa.
The chariot, or ‘Rath’, in the Rath Yatra is a significant parallel for the human body, with the ultimate deity portraying the soul within. The simple act of pulling the Rath signifies our life’s journey, controlled by the divine energy within us. This rite is a strong reminder of Dharmic philosophy, which underscores the inborn holiness found in all humans.
Subsequently, the Rath Yatra reached its heights in Puri, Odisha, where it is celebrated with great devotion to honour Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
