The 54th World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting took place in Davos, Switzerland, from January 15–19, 2024. The Indian government’s delegation to the WEF was led by Smt. Smriti Irani, Hon. Minister of Women and Child Development. She highlighted India’s commitment to inclusive growth and development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

One of the significant outcomes of the forum meetings was the launch of a “Global Good-Gender Equity and Equality Alliance.” It has the backing and approval of the World Economic Forum and the Indian government. The idea of this alliance stems from the G20 Leaders’ Declaration and Prime Minister Modi’s commitment towards women-led development.

The alliance intends to take forward the commitments made by the G20 leaders for the greater good of society. For this, it has come up with follow-up initiatives like Business 20, Women 20, and G20 EMPOWER. The alliance will be anchored by the CII Centre for Women Leadership, with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Invest India has joined it as an “institutional partner” and the World Economic Forum as a “network partner.” The alliance’s primary objective will be to bring together international best practices, knowledge sharing, and investments in women’s health, education, and enterprise.

Smt. Smriti Irani spearheaded this year’s innovative WEF initiative. It saw the creation of the first-ever Women Leadership Lounge by CII and BMGF. A number of meetings and panel discussions were held at this lounge on topics like “women-led development,” boosting women’s economic participation, closing the gender gap in technology, improving women’s health, etc. This lounge featured products from India’s tea, coffee boards, and handicrafts made by female entrepreneurs.

It also helped spark a much-needed discussion about global prosperity powered by women.

So far, the alliance has already garnered support from prominent industry players like Mastercard, Uber, Tata, Godrej, Bayer, Novartis, IMD, and the Serum Institute of India. Over 10,000 industry partners have joined the alliance via CII.

At the forum, Smt. Smriti Irani stated that “Prime Minister Modi has not only given a high growth rate and contained inflation but has also ensured food security for 800 million Indian citizens and also supported people overseas. This alliance is about the global good, as the name suggests.”

She praised the prime minister’s agenda of prioritizing women in governance and initiating a social revolution. Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of WEF, thanked India for sending a strong delegation even during election year.

Overall, India’s commitment to the principles of “Vasudeva Kutumbakam“—”One Earth, One Family, One Future.” Its sustained efforts towards “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, and Sabka Prayas.” The “Alliance for Global Good Gender Equity and Equality” is also an extension of the same principles. It will help resolve a wide range of gender-related issues and will lead to women led development.
