On Sunday, the unaccounted cash count at the locations connected to Congress Rajya Sabha MP Dhiraj Sahu came to an end. The ₹353 crore that the Income Tax Department has recovered is the largest sum that it has ever recovered in a single operation since Independence.
The IT Officials had to rope in three branches of State Bank of India (Bolangir, Titlagarh and Sambalpur) to count the seized amount of cash in 176 bags. SBI officials claim that because the machines weren’t made to run continuously, the counting process was beset by frequent machine failures. An official stated that they had to keep 40 machines on stand-by as machines stopped working. Many of the currency notes got stuck to each other due to mildew deposits and so they had to use dryers to separate them. Currently, a 20-member IT analysis team has flown in from Hyderabad for digital forensics .
While the counting was going on in the banks. The IT officials conducted additional raids on the country liquor breweries owned by Bunty Sahu and Rajesh Sahu. They were close to the Baldeo Sahu & Group of Companies which is a group company of Boudh Distilleries Private Limited. Thus, both are currently being questioned to figure out as to why such a large amount of cash was kept in the Sudapada area of Bolangir. According to a IT official, a polythene bag containing ₹5 lakh notes and bearing the name “Inspector Tiwari” was also found. Therefore, an interrogation into the involvement of an excise official or local police officials will also be conducted.
Amidst this raid, a political spat has occurred between the political parties. An old tweet of Dhiraj Sahu has gone viral wherein he expressed his pain over increasing corruption and black money in the country. He tweeted in November 2022 saying –
In another post of 2021 he asserted how rich are becoming richer and poor poorer. He wrote– “The poor have been made poorer, and the rich have become richer. When the country’s economy is continuously falling .Saheb’s friends are getting richer”
BJP soon reacted by highlighting the hypocrisy of Congress. “This is the case of institutionalized corruption. Ghotaley ki guarantee! Can you imagine ₹300 crores have come from one MP, how much money will come from 52 MP’s?!! Congress is corruption ki Beemari!” said BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla.
Amit shah also stated that “It can be now understood as to why allegation against the Modi government were made. That it is misusing investigative agencies. It was because of the fear that their corruption will be exposed”.
Shahdeo, the state BJP spokesperson, reiterated the same. He said “In this entire matter, ED and CBI should also come forward. And MP Dhiraj Sahu should be strictly questioned. Imagine how many trillions the entire party must have embezzled when just one Congress MP has cash worth billions.”
Congress Party on the other hand has distanced itself from Dhiraj Sahu case. All India Congress Committee (AICC) member and Congress’s Jharkhand in-charge Avinash Pandey told the media in Ranchi, “It is his joint family’s collective business. That family has operated a business for more than a century. Only he can provide information about where he got such a huge amount of money. But as he is associated with Congress and is a Rajya Sabha member of our party. We have sought a clarification from him.”
Overall, there is a high probability that he might be having several times this cash in save havens aboard. Thus, ED and NIA should investigate from their angle.
