In the recent session of the Lok Sabha, the opposition raised the topic of Paid Period Leave in both government and corporate sectors. Disguised as their idea of supporting office-going women, the concept emphasizes the low regard the opposition leaders have for women. Moreover, this concept of RJD’s MP Manoj Jha ensures the promotion of Toxic Feminism in the workplace. Smriti Irani, the Women & Child Development Minister and BJP Lok Sabha MP, strongly expressed her firm opposition to the concept in totality. Let’s talk about how the rejection of paid menstrual leave is a strong stance against ‘Toxic Feminism’!

Smriti Irani is a strong female leader with outspoken views. She clearly tells the Parliament that menstruation is a natural aspect of women’s life journeys. Moreover, she specifies that the opposition should not use periods used as a political tool. Menstruation in a woman is not a handicap that needs special consideration in the workplace by employers. As a menstruating woman herself, she stood against the notion that women should be entitled to paid leave solely based on their natural physiological cycle. In fact, she believes that this provision will lead to discrimination against women candidates.

The decision to reject paid period leave is a stand against Toxic Feminism. Those who like this idea are usually pseudo-feminists that advocate for selective rights based on gender. Why should menstruation, a normal and regular part of an adult female, be used as a tool to lobby for special privileges? Such concepts of Toxic Feminism advocates that menstruation should not be a cause of gender discrimination in temples and Sabarimala Yatra.

Contrarily, they want special paid leaves in the workplace for their period cycles. This contradictory stance undermines their ideal of equal opportunity for all.

Another key aspect pseudo-feminists must understand is that paid menstrual leave will have a damaging impact on employment dynamics for women. Why would an employer hire a female candidate if she would need at least 48-60 days of leave extra in comparison to a male candidate? The Paid Period Leave concept would lead to gender discrimination during the hiring process.

Feminists want equal pay for men and women, right? Well, the paid menstrual leave concept would ensure that women will not be doing the same amount of work as their male colleagues. So does this concept support equal opportunities for all? Of course not! It just ensures that toxic women in the workplace will act more and more entitled!!

Smriti Irani’s rejection of paid period leave concept aligns with the broader ideology of equal opportunity for all, irrespective of gender. Equal Pay For Equal Work! This concept supports that men and women receive the same treatment at work without introducing the element of gender-biased physiological needs or biological differences. This menstrual leave concept contradicts the principles of meritocracy and fair competition in the professional sphere. Thus, the rejection of paid menstrual leave upholds the principle of equal pay for equal work.

Toxic Feminism is trying to look at all concepts through the lens of gender bias. Their idea of biological differences changes with their convenience. A woman does not stop sending her children to school during her menstrual cycle. A woman does not stop cooking and cleaning due to her periods. Then why does she need special leave every month for a natural element of her womanhood?! If a female finds coming to work stressful during her natural period cycles, then she must consider a visit to the doctor’s office! Monthly cycles do not hinder a normal woman from doing her job and duties!!

Paid Period Leave Vs. Maternity Leave

Some female netizens are angry at MP Smriti Irani for her rejection of paid menstrual leave. They ask the leader if paid period leave is special treatment for women, then what about the need for maternity leaves? Such misguided pseudo-feminists do not realize that maternity leave is already a hidden cause for discrimination during the hiring process for married women of child-bearing age. However, it is justified as a special circumstance, since maternity leave is usually used at most twice in a woman’s life. Moreover, a woman undergoes a medical intervention in one way or another during the birthing process. Thus, maternity leave can be considered as a female-specific medical leave.

Menstruation is not a handicap & no paid leave should be granted for women in her periods.

Then why grant maternity leave @smritiirani

However, despite the rules governing maternity leave, a woman employee usually misses her chance for promotion or equal increment if she avails maternity leave. This does not occue due to an employer bias against women employees. It is a fact that during the maternity leave period, female employees do not generate their fair share of output for the employer. Thus, unofficially, women who take maternity leave know that their careers will be put on pause for the duration. Therefore, unless women in the workforce are ready to pause their careers every month, paid menstrual leave is a bad idea for women!

Advocates of equal opportunity and equal pay should also realize that selective advocacy for women’s rights will end up harming females in the workforce. In pursuit of true gender equality, it is essential to reject policies that may inadvertently perpetuate gender-based distinctions in a professional team. Thus, the Rejection of Paid Period Leave is a normal reaction to Toxic Feminism prevalent in the modern world!
