Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga is known for his intense narratives and morally ambiguous characters in films like “Arjun Reddy” and “Kabir Singh.” He has once again taken audiences on a wild ride with his latest creation, “Animal.” In this seething study of a son’s obsessive hero worship descending into madness, Vanga unleashes his fiercest storytelling impulses and a care-a-damn attitude to deliver ruthless violence.

Dysfunctional Family

“Animal” opens with a monochrome note, setting the tone for a story that refuses to conform to the conventional black and white morality. Rannvijay Singh Balbir (played by Ranbir Kapoor), the film’s protagonist, reflects on the bittersweet memories of his father, Balbir Singh (Anil Kapoor), on the occasion of his father’s centenary celebration. What follows is a journey from desperation to deadly actions, exploring the intricate dynamics of a dysfunctional family.

Set in Delhi’s wealthiest Punjabi family, “Animal” embodies the extreme dysfunctionality of a family that cannot live with each other but also cannot live without each other.

Balbir Singh, the stern and self-absorbed patriarch, becomes the central figure in his son Vijay’s world. Raised on patriarchal ideals of masculinity, Vijay sees himself as the inheritor and protector of disruptive values.

This sets forth a tone that defines families as dysfunctional and creates very problematic role setups for the youth!

Grey Character?!

Despite its out-and-out black tone, “Animal” attempts to find shades of grey in Rannvijay Singh Balbir’s character. The film explores his transformation from a desperate individual to a deadly force, fueled by a desire for his father’s approval. However, the veneer of civility worn by Balbir Singh cracks, revealing the trauma and nostalgia in Vijay’s childhood.

Ranbir Kapoor, embodies a complex character with shades of brutality and hypocrisy. Vanga Reddy’s narrative presents a lawless universe where Vijay’s actions, oscillating between murder and crude jokes. He paints a portrait of an unhinged and unstable mind.

Gratuitous Violence

The film’s violence, captured in red-filtered frames, reaches peak epic-ness during a blood-soaked rampage where Vijay, wielding an axe, wreaks havoc in a South Korean-style corridor fight. The intense action sequences, combined with Marathi folk music and Punjabi war cries reminiscent of a Monster-verse tailored to the Ranbir Kapoor kind.

Ranbir Kapoor’s eerie resemblance to Sanjay Dutt adds vulnerability to his bad boy persona. The film’s three-hour-plus runtime is relentless, serving as a medley of feral rage and the dance of dysfunction.

Animal has faced criticism for its portrayal of women and the pervasive depravity. The clash between Ranbir Kapoor and Bobby Deol’s antagonist in the second half adds another layer to the narrative.

“Animal” is a journey of dysfunction, a cinematic symphony of despair and rage. Welcome to the jungle, where the beast within is unleashed and morality is a blurry line!
