“Animal” opens with a monochrome note, setting the tone for a story that refuses to conform to the conventional black and white morality. Rannvijay Singh Balbir (played by Ranbir Kapoor), the film’s protagonist, reflects on the bittersweet memories of his father, Balbir Singh (Anil Kapoor), on the occasion of his father’s centenary celebration. What follows is a journey from desperation to deadly actions, exploring the intricate dynamics of a dysfunctional family.
Balbir Singh, the stern and self-absorbed patriarch, becomes the central figure in his son Vijay’s world. Raised on patriarchal ideals of masculinity, Vijay sees himself as the inheritor and protector of disruptive values.

Despite its out-and-out black tone, “Animal” attempts to find shades of grey in Rannvijay Singh Balbir’s character. However, the veneer of civility worn by Balbir Singh cracks, revealing the trauma and nostalgia in Vijay’s childhood.

The film’s violence, captured in red-filtered frames, reaches peak epic-ness during a blood-soaked rampage where Vijay, wielding an axe, wreaks havoc in a South Korean-style corridor fight. The intense action sequences, combined with Marathi folk music and Punjabi war cries reminiscent of a Monster-verse tailored to the Ranbir Kapoor kind.
Ranbir Kapoor’s eerie resemblance to Sanjay Dutt adds vulnerability to his bad boy persona. The film’s three-hour-plus runtime is relentless, serving as a medley of feral rage and the dance of dysfunction.
